To maintain “discipline”, the GB police chief prohibits staff members from using TikTok.

In an effort to uphold “discipline,” the Gilgit-Baltistan police commander on Monday prohibited force members from using the social media site TikTok.

“It is hereby directed that no GB police officer or official shall use social media platform (TikTok) in order to maintain discipline, uniformity, and dignity of the force,” stated a notification released today by the office of the GB inspector general of police.

It warned that any non-compliance would be “viewed seriously and cause disciplinary action” and directed all district police officers and unit heads to inform all employees under their supervision of the directive.

Two constables from the Security Division Islamabad were suspended and are being investigated in July for allegedly creating and posting TikTok videos while in uniform, in violation of the capital police’s social media policy.

Dozens of additional lower-level officials were reportedly warned and told to delete their TikTok accounts in order to prevent further action, according to sources.

The Punjab Police issued a warning to its officials in March not to use their personal social media profiles to share “offensive views” against the state.

Policies governing the usage of social media by officers and officials were developed by the Punjab and Islamabad Police in September 2024. Police officers and officials were prohibited by the policies from expressing any views or remarks on any social media site.

Additionally, heads were tasked with personally overseeing and keeping tabs on the actions of officers and officials assigned to their divisions, zones, and units.

That same month, the government once again urged its workers to abstain from sharing information with the media or any unauthorized government official on social media, as well as from expressing political or religious views.
