ISLAMABAD: According to police, 462 social media accounts that propagate hatred have been blocked by the capital police’s Violent Extremism Prevention Unit.
They said that in order to stop the propagation of hate speech and propaganda against the nation and its institutions, the unit looks into and analyzes user accounts on various social media platforms.
After conducting a thorough investigation into social media, the unit located 1,522 Twitter, Facebook, and other platform accounts that were engaged in these kinds of activities. It then sent a letter to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) requesting the closure of those accounts, 462 of which have already been blocked.
Regarding this, it was discovered that 350 accounts were involved in disseminating content related to terrorism, 47 accounts were involved in propaganda against the nation, and 65 accounts were involved in religious hatred. Additionally, the 1,060 social media accounts that are still active will shortly be closed.
According to the police, preventing extremism aids in the fight against terrorism and improves the effectiveness of the capital’s security. Teams from the capital police also frequently interact with madrassahs and other educational institutions, and sermons in mosques are examined to combat extremism.
In a similar vein, they said, the team monitors political, linguistic, and religious extremist content on social media and other websites, examines it, and creates reports in addition to identifying any illegal activity that warrants legal action.
