The antitrust authority’s five-year ban on WhatsApp and its owner Meta Platforms’ other apps, including Facebook and Instagram, sharing data for advertising reasons was halted on Thursday by an Indian appeals tribunal.

Because it would negatively affect its business in India, Meta is attempting to overturn the Competition Commission of India’s (CCI) November ruling, which banned WhatsApp from sharing data with Meta businesses for advertising purposes for a period of five years.

While it considers a challenge to the antitrust order by Meta and WhatsApp, the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) ordered a suspension of the ban.

The appeals tribunal stated that WhatsApp’s economic model “may collapse” as a result of the prohibition.

WhatsApp may have a “roll back or pause” some functions in India and limit its capacity to provide consumers with personalized advertisements on Facebook and Instagram , Meta said the appeals tribunal in its petition to the ban.

According to a Meta representative, the company “will evaluate next steps” and applauded the interim verdict.

A request for comment on the decision was not immediately answered by the Competition Commission of India.

In accordance with the November antitrust judgment, WhatsApp must provide users the choice to opt out of a 2021 privacy policy modification, according to the order issued on Thursday.
