‘Nutrition labels’ will be added to Twilio’s AI services, which automate customer communications for businesses.
These labels resemble the nutrition facts labels that consumers are accustomed to seeing on food items. They’ll detail the AI’s performance, accuracy, bias, and other crucial aspects like data usage, risk assessment, and whether a “human in the loop” is present.

The initiative’s objective is to increase transparency while fostering trust in AI. Consumers are supposed to be more inclined to trust AI if they are better informed about how it operates. Additionally, Twilio provides other businesses with an online tool to assist them in creating their own AI nutrition labels.

Why does it matter?

As generative AI technology becomes more prevalent, the need for transparency becomes paramount to establish trust. Various stakeholders, including regulators, customers, and the public, must be able to evaluate the reliability and potential consequences of AI systems across different sectors like customer service, finance, and healthcare.

Regulators have taken a keen interest in regulating AI content labelling, however, at this point mostly this was done on a voluntary basis.

Transparency is essential to building trust as generative AI technology becomes more widely used. Regulators, consumers, and the general public must be able to assess the dependability and potential consequences of AI systems across various industries, such as customer service, finance, and healthcare.

Regulators are very interested in regulating AI content labeling, but up until this point, most of it was voluntary.

The US government has obtained voluntary commitments from top AI firms that call for the creation of strong technical tools like watermarking systems to identify content produced by AI. This encourages creativity while lowering the likelihood of fraud and deceit.

Tech companies are urged to label AI-generated content in the European Union (EU) as part of their efforts to combat false information. Platforms are being urged by the EU to implement technology that can recognize AI-generated content and prominently mark it for users. In order to stop malicious actors from using AI to spread false information, this focus also extends to services that use generative AI, such as Microsoft’s New Bing and Google’s Bard AI-augmented search services.

To stop the creation of harmful or malicious content, the Canadian government is developing a voluntary code of conduct for AI developers. The code includes provisions for user safety and the avoidance of biases while attempting to ensure a clear distinction between content created by humans and content created by AI.

China has released interim measures to regulate generative AI services. These measures provide guidelines for the development and use of AI technology, including content labelling and verification. China has also introduced new regulations that prohibit the creation of AI-generated media without clear labels, such as watermarks.
