According to a press release from its public relations agency, social media platform TikTok on Tuesday unveiled a new search guide intended to assist users in Pakistan in obtaining reliable and current information during the ongoing monsoon flood season.

Several portions of the country see high rainfall and an increased danger of extreme weather events like flash floods and landslides, particularly in its northern and western regions, when the monsoon season, which normally lasts from late June to September, begins.

The press release said, “Now, users looking for flood-related updates on TikTok will see a prominent banner urging them to verify information through credible sources.”

“This guide provides users in Pakistan with verified information about natural disasters by connecting them directly with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA),” the statement continued.

Along with connecting users to TikTok’s Safety Centre resources, the guide also includes a direct connection to the platform’s Tragic Event Support guide, which offers helpful assistance to those impacted by upsetting events.

The guide explains what qualifies as a terrible event, which can include anything from natural catastrophes to personal loss, and gives users advice on how to get mental health help and share or report content about such occurrences in an appropriate manner.

Fahad Muhammad Khan Niazi, the head of public policy and government relations for TikTok in Pakistan, was quoted by the state as saying, “We recognize that having access to timely and accurate information is crucial during times of crisis.”

“We hope to promote informed decision-making and guarantee user safety by collaborating with organizations that are directly involved in disaster response and increasing the visibility of these resources in our community.”

Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives, emphasized earlier this month how urgent it is to combat the growing dangers of disinformation and misinformation.

Attaullah Tarar, Minister of Information and Broadcasting, stated last year that the government was working to establish a distinct body to protect people’s digital rights and combat misinformation and rumors on social media.
